From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Enlightenment broadly means wisdom or understanding enabling clarity of perception. However, the English word covers two concepts which can be quite distinct: religious or spiritual enlightenment and secular or intellectual enlightenment. This can cause confusion, since those who claim intellectual enlightenment often reject spiritual concepts altogether. In religious use, enlightenment is most closely associated with South and East Asian religious experience, being used to translate words such as (in Buddhism) nirvana, bodhi or satori, or (in Hinduism) moksha. The concept also has parallels in the Abrahamic religions (in the Kabbalah tradition in Judaism, in Christian mysticism or Gnosticism, and in the Sufi tradition of Islam). In secular use, the concept refers mainly to the European intellectual movement known as the Age of Enlightenment, also called the Age of Reason referring to philosophical developments related to scientific rationality in the 17th and 18th centuries. Q. I'm really interested in Voltaire's relation to the Enlightenment. How does his views in Candide correspond to it, and how do they dispute the general views associated with the Enlightenment. I would appreciate some analyzations of Voltaire's use of reason. Many thanks! Asked by Tuck - Tue Jan 8 20:02:22 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Here's a good site of a teacher who gives a lot of credit to Voltaire: Beyond that, you should be able to get some great information with google searches. Here's one: Candide is an outlandishly humorous, far-fetched tale by Voltaire satirizing the optimism espoused by the philosophers of the Age of Enlightenment. It is the story of a young man s adventures throughout the world, where he witnesses much evil and disaster. Throughout his travels, he adheres to the teachings of his tutor, Pangloss, believing that "all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds." Candide is Voltaire s answer to what he saw as an absurd belief proposed by the Optimists - an easy way to rationalize evil and suffering.
