Does the fact the ancient Gary Player can still take part in The Masters undermine the competition's worth?
Q. I think it does. He's taking the place of a young up-and-coming golfer. He knows he hasn't got a hope in hell of winning it now, but still he carries on. It's just ridiculous self indulgence.

A. He only wants to beat Arnold Palmers appearance record. He has no chance of even making the cut, it's an embarrassment to the game. Would they let Rod Laver play at Wimbledon because he won 30 years ago!

I would like to earn a Master's studying Ancient Civilizations What are the best schools?
Q. I just completed my Bachelors in Business, but for my Master's I wanted to take a different route and study Ancient Civilizations. Can anyone tell me the schools with the best programs for this course of study? If it helps Id like to focus on Ancient Greece and Ancient Egypt. Thanks!
Asked by jayfoshag99 - Wed May 3 15:01:57 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are so many great schools - it's impossible to list them all. Here are the top 15, in my opinion. Harvard Brown UC Berkeley U Michigan University of Chicago Yale Princeton U Penn UT Austin UCLA Cornell Columbia UNC Chapel Hill Bryn Mawr Duke Stanford However, you will have serious problems in qualifying for admission with a bachelor's degree in business. (Unless you minored in Classics, of course.) If you are serious about your study, you'll need to learn Greek and take some classes at the undergraduate level in Classics before you apply. You will need superb letters of recommendations from professors in Classics as well, so work hard in those courses! Best wishes to you.

A. I love it - egyptology. YOu must first study Egyptology. You can go to the best school - University of Chicago. Then you can get an MA in Egyptology and a PHD in Egyptology as well. Some have program in near eastern studies with emphasis in egyptology. But you want a degree program in Egyptology. Some Egyptologist also have another masters degree in anthropology, or history, or a language, or in art history. Keep in mind these programs are tough. You need to have a excellent command of French, German, Ancient Egyptian, Hittite, Arabic. Then you have to learn to read Hierogliphics. Schools to look at NYU, University of Pennsylvania, UCLA, Brown University, Univesity of Chicago, and University of Toronto. Get the degree in… [cont.]

I have a BA in Comm & I want 2 b an archeologist. Do I have 2 do another BA or can I go str8 2 masters in arc?
Q. I'm just trying to figure out what is involved in becoming an archeologist. If I have my mind set that I'm going to get my PhD, can I skip redoing my BA in Archeology/Anthropology, and go straight to my masters in Archeology? And does anyone kno the best places to do a BA/Masters/PhD in Archeology (I'm interested in both ancient classical and underwater Archeology)? In addition, if anyone knows of any funding that's available for this kind of thing (grants, scholarships, etc.) that would be useful as I already have debt from my BA in Communications.

A. What you need to do is find out the prerequisites for the program you want to go into. You may have to take some classes in archeology and geology but I doubt you will have to get another degree.

Secondly you must be able to master the fine art of cooking with sunflowerseeds and fwower petals only. And thirdly be able to drink a litre and a half of lentil wine crushed between your own bare toes without hillucinationg or losing consciousness. This process takes a long long time!!! It is called fermenting time and space in your centre. Good luck with this most honourable mastery young gwasshopper!

For those of you in a Master's program, are you more into your classes than when you were an undergrad?
Q. I would love to get a masters in ancient Greek and Roman art. That is what I love. Now that I am a senior in college, I just find some classes so boring and uninteresting, maybe because they are not my specialty (even if they are part of my major). Is it different when you are in grad school? OOOPS wrong category, but answer if it applies lolol
Asked by Lasata - Mon Feb 4 14:06:35 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Honestly, I'm less into my classes. But I think it has a lot more to do with my type of program and my (good) experience as an undergrad than anything to do with graduate school itself. I'm taking a "practical" program but my undergrad was in English. I'm really missing the reading and discussion of literature (we had a lot of seminar classes in my undergrad). I think if I were taking a Master's in English I would feel differently.

A. Jiu Jitsu is good. I train in Goju Zen, otherwiswe known as Goju Ryu. Goju means "Hard-Soft" It is an Okinawan based ,Just like Karate started in Okinawa 1000's of years ago. Goju has a chinese influence where we also use "soft, "or circle techniques like the Chinese Martial Arts do. Original Okinawan Karate is Straight blocks & punches intended to "break", Goju has some soft blocks & energy misdirection to use your opponent's energy against himself. Did you notice that all forms of Karate, when you "strike." both feet are on the ground, generating more power than if you were in the air like Taekwondo. Don't get me wrong Taekwondo (from Korea), lots of kicks is also an excellent discipline. I have been fortunate to get 1on 1 or 1on2… [cont.]

Ancient Egypt Education: What is the history? What are their contributions to the world?
Q. What are their teaching methods? Who were their students? Who were their masters?
Asked by Aqua - Tue Aug 1 00:00:23 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Very little is known about the education system in ancient Egypt. Most children were educated by their parents and didn't go to any school. No schools or schoolmasters are known from the Old Kingdom (ca. 2686- ca. 2160 BCE). Usually boys were educated by their fathers, although some elder men took sons of others as their pupils. The pupils were supposed to be devoted to their teachers, and called them 'father'. Some wise men had several 'sons'. The term 'house of instruction' is known in the Middle Kingdom (ca. 2040- ca. 1786 BCE). The most important one was in the capital. It was intended for the future functionaries of the central government and seems to have been open for children of ordinary citizens. We know a bit more about the… [cont.]

A. The best thing to do is research the faculty of schools you are interested in and find out who does research in the area you are interested in. If they are doing project in Egypt or Greece then you can probably get in on the fieldwork, as profs are always looking for free labor. Your best bet for this in a MA from a British school - I went to Durham, so I'm a bit biased. I'm also American and have been in the UK working in commercial archaeology now for 2 years. Also, if you can, get some field experience before you get your MA. It will be easier to get a job after. Employers are less apt to hire someone with an MA if they have no hands on experience at their BA level. If you are already in the UK studying it is easier and cheaper to… [cont.]
