In Indian religions, Moksha (Sanskrit: मोक्ष mokṣa) or Mukti (Sanskrit: मुक्ति), literally "release" (both from a root muc "to let loose, let go"), is the liberation from samsara and the concomitant suffering involved in being subject to the cycle of repeated death and rebirth (reincarnation).

Origins

It is highly probable that the concept of moksha was first developed in India by non-Aryan people outside of the caste system whose spiritual ideas greatly influenced later Indian religious thought. Buddhism and Jainism are continuations of this tradition, and the early Upanishadic movement was influenced by it. Reincarnation was likely adopted from this religious culture by Brahmin orthodoxy. Brahmins wrote the earliest recorded scriptures containing these ideas in the early Upanishads.

Under the influence of karma, the soul moves upwards and downwards on the wheel of rebirth, the round of birth, death and rebirth undergone by all living beings. It is a cycle of transmigration from one living form into another. The belief in samsara is connected with the Hindu belief in karma. The law of karma states that just as every action has a cause, so actions have reactions that are impossible to escape. Karma is the cause of our particular destiny, the law of nature that ensures that we become what we think or do. Misfortunes in our present life are… [cont.]

A. There are 3 types of moksha... first, let me back up, moksha is the unraveling of the layers of material ignorance so that the soul / consciousness itself exists in it's intrinsic environment of pure awareness. The first level is shanti-moksha which IS nirvana. Nirvana literally means "no arrows" or "no pain" - this is the first level of moksha where the pains of existing under the covering of material ignorance are complete removed. The second level of moksha is siddha-swaprup moksha - which goes BEYOND nirvana. At this level of enlightenment the soul has not only cast off it's ignorant material identifications, it has now gone a step further and cultivates knowledge-filled eternal identification. In essence, the soul attains a… [cont.]
