Sweden has land borders with Norway to the west and Finland to the northeast, and water borders with Denmark, Germany and Poland to the south and Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Russia to the east. Sweden is also connected to Denmark by a bridge-tunnel across the Öresund. At 450,295 square kilometres (173,860 sq mi), Sweden is the third largest country in the European Union by area, with a total population of about 9.4 million. Sweden has a low population density of 21 inhabitants per square kilometre (54 /sq mi) but a considerably higher density in the southern half of the country. About 85% of the population live in urban areas, and it is expected that these numbers will gradually rise as a part of the ongoing urbanization. Sweden's capital is Stockholm, which is also the largest city in the country (population of 1.3 million in the urban area and with 2 million in the metropolitan area). Sweden emerged as an independent and unified country during the Middle Ages. In the 17th century, the country expanded its territories to form the Swedish Empire. The empire grew to be one of the great powers of Europe in the 17th and early 18th century. Most of the conquered territories outside the Scandinavian Peninsula were lost during the 18th and 19th centuries. The eastern half of Sweden, present-day Finland, was lost to Russia in 1809. The last war in which Sweden was directly involved was in 1814, when Sweden by military means forced Norway into a personal union which lasted until 1905. Since then, Sweden has been at peace, adopting a non-aligned foreign policy in peacetime and neutrality in wartime. Today, Sweden is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy of government and a highly developed economy. It ranks first in the world in The Economist's Democracy Index and seventh in the United Nations' Human Development Index. Sweden has been a member of the European Union since 1 January 1995 and is a member of the OECD. From Wikipedia under the

Q. I really want to study International Business in Sweden. The only "University" I've found that has this bachelors degree, taught in english, is Malardalen University, which I was told was a university college. In sweden, is there a difference between a University and University college. More importantly, is there a difference between bachelor degrees from either? Asked by Heythereee - Tue Jun 10 01:02:46 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. No, there is no difference between the two if you are going for a bachelor's degree. The difference between a Swedish university and a hoegskola (or a university college as you call it) is that a university have the authority to give people a Doctor's degree. A Swedish employer will not think a bachelor's degree is any less important for being given at a hoegskola (university college). Q. I am planning on moving to sweden next summer to live with my boyfriend who is a swedish resident. i have applied for a residence visa and everything and as long as i am accepted, i will go. however, i have epilepsy and my meds here in the US cost between $800-$900 every 3 months. knowing health care is free, what kind of prescription coverage could i get, just moving there, not being a citizen? Asked by Erin Farley - Mon Aug 3 21:17:24 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I agree w Ms Monroe, completely. However, I came to Sweden as a student for a 10 month program and was not able to get a personal number at first (I have since extended my visa and now I have one). As such, I had to have a private insurance in case of any emergency. With that said, I did have to go to the emergency room after being in a biking accident, and they never once asked me for my insurance and I only had to pay 300 KR (45 dollars +/-). Normally, if you are getting a visa based on family ties you get at least 1 year, so you wont have to worry about the personal number. You will get it. Plus, the birth control that usually costs me 20 dollar co-pay or 80 dollars uninsured costs about 12 dollars a month here- insured or not. … [cont.] Answered by Constanza - Tue Aug 4 18:57:00 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Sweden" |
