Buddhists recognize him as an awakened teacher who shared his insights to help sentient beings end their suffering by understanding the true nature of phenomena, thereby escaping the cycle of suffering and rebirth (saṃsāra), that is, achieving Nirvana. Among the methods various schools of Buddhism apply towards this goal are: ethical conduct and altruistic behaviour, devotional practices, ceremonies and the invocation of bodhisattvas, renunciation of worldly matters, cultivating continuous mindfulness, meditation, physical exercises, study, and the cultivation of wisdom.

Buddhism is broadly recognized as being composed of two major branches:

While Buddhism remains most popular within these regions of Asia, both branches are now found throughout the world.

Buddhist schools disagree on what the historical teachings of Gautama Buddha were, so much so that some scholars claim Buddhism does not have a clearly definable common core. Significant disagreement also exists over the importance and canonicity of various scriptures.

Various sources put the number of Buddhists in the world between 230 million and 500 million.

How can buddhism and its teachings help a person ?
Q. Buddhism is much more than a religion. It is a philosophy of Life, because philosphy means "love of wisdom" and the Buddhist path can be summed up as follows: 1 - to lead a moral and ethically sound life. 2 - to be mindful & aware of one's thoughts, words, and actions. 3 - to develop Wisdom and Understanding. But how can Buddhism help me ? Buddhism explains our real purpose in life. It explains apparent injustice and inequality around the world. It Provides a code of practice which brings Peace and Happiness. Buddhism has the answers to the problems in modern materialistic societies. What is the difference between Zen and Buddhism?
Q. Does Zen follow the precepts, rules and regulations of buddhism, or is it seperate in itself?

A. Zen is merely a form of Mahayana Buddhism that places great importance on moment-by-moment awareness and 'seeing deeply into the nature of things' by direct experience. It emerged as a distinct school of thought, in China - and spread to Vietnam, Korea, Japan, and, in modern times, the rest of the world. The Zen schools, like other Buddhist sects, teach the basic fundamental elements of Buddhist philosophy, including the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, pratitya samutpada, the five precepts, the five skandhas, and the three dharma seals: non-self, impermanence, and dukkha. Zen philosophy also includes teachings specific to Mahayana Buddhism, including the Mahayanan conception of the paramitas and the ideal of the bodhisattva's… [cont.]

How does buddhism appear to you today in the world?
Q. I have to do a project on what other people think of Buddhism, (what is your sense of it). Please just tell me what you think.

A. Buddhism is not really a religion its more of a philosophy , it teaches you tolerance and understanding of other people's beliefs be it religious or spiritual . To be able to try and live your life without hate and advocate peace . There is no written on paper rules that tells you what a Buddhist is , i find explaining what it is very difficult as it is what you make it . I class myself as a Buddhist , i came to endorse the philosophy whilst living in SE Asia . You look at all religion's and the wars and lives that have been lost because of any particular faith , then look at Buddhism . I hope i have explained well enough what it means to me .

  • The religion of future will be a cosmic religion. It should transcend a personal God and avoid dogmas and theology. Covering both the natural and the spiritual, it should be based on a religious sense arising from the experience of all things, natural and spiritual as a meaningful unity. Buddhism answers this description... If there is any religion that would cope with modern scientific needs, it would be Buddhism.

  • I prefer Buddhism because it gives three principles in combination, which no other religion does. Buddhism teaches prajna (understanding as against superstition and supernaturalism), karuna (love), and samata (equality). This is what man wants for a good and happy life. Neither god nor soul can save society.
