In philosophy, psychology, and the cognitive sciences, perception is the process of attaining awareness or understanding of sensory information. It is a task far more complex than was imagined in the 1950s and 1960s, when it was predicted that building perceiving machines would take about a decade, a goal which is still very far from fruition. The word comes from the Latin words perceptio, percipio, and means "receiving, collecting, action of taking possession, apprehension with the mind or senses."

Perception is one of the oldest fields in psychology. The oldest quantitative law in psychology is the Weber-Fechner law, which quantifies the relationship between the intensity of physical stimuli and their perceptual effects. The study of perception gave rise to the Gestalt school of psychology, with its emphasis on holistic approach.

What one perceives is a result of interplays between past experiences, including one’s culture, and the interpretation of the perceived. If the percept does not have support in any of these perceptual bases it is unlikely to rise above perceptual threshold.

What is your perception of police driving?
Q. Under no circumstances am I having a go or moaning in anyway about police officers! I require some background information on the public perception of police driving practices and standards. The sorts of answers I require are as follows: As a member of the public: Do you know what it takes to become a police driver? Do you know what skills are required? Do you know what the rules are as a police driver on a blue light run? How do you deal with a police car when they are travelling behind you with blue lights? These are just a few examples of things I am looking for, if you have any other information, examples or even moans you would like to add, then that would be greatly appreciated. If you chose to answer this question as a… [cont.]

How important is perception when considering an ideology?
Q. Most feminists cite equality as the ultimate goal of feminism. However, the perception of feminism vastly differs from this amorphous concept of equality. How effective can an ideology be if it is mostly misunderstood?

A. Ever hear the saying: "There is no Reality, only perception"? Well, this means, that no one really sees reality for what it is because they are viewing the world through a filter of their own bias and past experience. I think people who strictly follow cults like feminism are the worst offenders at having a warped perception of the world.

What is this strange perception where things look bigger than they really are?
Q. I was about 4 or 5 (I'm 27 now) when I first got my chicken pox. That night while watching television on the couch, my vision or perception changed drastically. Colors were normal. No double-vision. Everything around me would look large, including myself. It's like I'm a tiny mouse peeking out of a large skull. These occurrences will last anywhere up to a half hour and happen at random times. I get these maybe 2 or 3 times a year, yet still have this problem. I have no physical side-effects when this happens to me.

A. I have never heard of this at all whatsoever. maybe it is a neurological problem that happened due to your fever and still re occurs occasionally. Maybe you should see a neurologist and have them give you their opinion. I doubt that it is optical.

  • I see the same sadness in the eyes of conformists as I do in the eyes of those convulsing radically in opposition. I talk to people that aren't like me, individually, thoughtfully. And I listen. If I walk away from a conversation thinking differently than before I entered into it, I have succeeded in doing something that doesn't compute. If I haven't interacted and challenged what I know, resulting in a change of perception, I am still running my own set of stupid old programs.
