From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Religion (from O.Fr. religion "religious community," from L. religionem (nom. religio) "respect for what is sacred, reverence for the gods," "obligation, the bond between man and the gods" is the belief in and worship of a god or gods, or more in general a set of beliefs explaining the existence of and giving meaning to the universe, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs. Aspects of religion include narrative, symbolism, beliefs, and practices that are supposed to give meaning to the practitioner's experiences of life. Whether the meaning centers on a deity or deities, or an ultimate truth, religion is commonly identified by the practitioner's prayer, ritual, meditation, music and art, among other things, and is often interwoven with society and politics. It may focus on specific supernatural, metaphysical, and moral claims about reality (the cosmos and human nature) which may yield a set of religious laws and ethics and a particular lifestyle. Religion also encompasses ancestral or cultural traditions, writings, history, and mythology, as well as personal faith and religious experience. The development of religion has taken many forms in various cultures, with continental differences. The term "religion" refers both to the personal practices related to communal faith and to group rituals and communication stemming from shared conviction. "Religion" is sometimes used interchangeably with "faith" or "belief system", but it is more socially defined than personal convictions, and it entails specific behaviors, respectively. Religion is often described as a communal system for the coherence of belief focusing on a system of thought, unseen being, person, or object, that is considered to be supernatural, sacred, divine, or of the highest truth. Moral codes, practices, values, institutions, tradition, rituals, and scriptures are often traditionally associated with the core belief, and these may have some overlap with concepts in secular philosophy. Religion is also often described as a "way of life" or a life stance. From Wikipedia under the

Asked by Benjammin - Sat Aug 18 12:42:35 2007 - - 14 Answers - 5 Comments A. Religion is about how man gets to God. Christianity is about how God got to you. While religions explain how you can get to God through following man made traditions, works, karma, etc. God says receive My forgiveness. Man could not keep the law and get into heaven by his own works, so God became flesh and did what we could not, live a sinless life and pay the price of our sins. God doesn't want a religion, He wants a relationship with you. Don't mistake all the man made traditions and denomination styles for the real thing, a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. If you look to other people, you will be dissapointed but if you follow Jesus and His Word, you will never be let down. I did some reading on my art history book and it says something about how the empires back then used to use religion to fool the people into building empires. It has to do something with beliefs and whatever. Asked by bap32211 - Sun Nov 22 17:38:46 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. That's a very crude way of putting it, but basically its correct. The purpose of all religion is to make group of people A do what group of people B want them to. Therefore, if you tell people the/a God will be happy with them if they build temples, or celebrate days, or build colliseums, they will. The Roman Empire fell because people started converting to christianity which preached polar opposite values (love, tolerance, etc) to the Roman pantheon (strength, power, dominance, honour) and became the Byzantinian Empire. Q. Personal experience testimony welcomed. Seems that all aggressive religion strains have three things in common: 1. they claim to be the only truth or at least the best purest truth 2. They claim to be the fastest growing religion in the world 3. They claim to be the only religion hated and persecuted by others Asked by Jade | My Brain is My Shepherd - Wed Aug 27 02:59:44 2008 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments A. I don't know who's the most persecuted, but it is most definitely fundamentalist Christians doing most of the persecuting. If anyone tries to prevent the Christians from persecuting someone, they'll be called communists or freedom hating anti-Americans. This is why so many Christians hate the ACLU - they stand up for people being persecuted. In recent news, a Bible believing Christian high school principal took it upon himself to indecently assault schoolgirls who had the audacity to stand up for a lesbian pupil who he had mistreated quite horribly.
